Business Finance for Security Leaders
Security budgets are lost in finance meetings, not in technical reviews. This four week course teaches security leaders to read the statements, build a defensible budget, and put a proposal in the format the finance function already uses.
No accounting background is assumed. By the end you can explain a security investment in terms of cost, risk and cash flow, and answer the follow-up questions.

What you will be able to do
- Read an income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement with confidence
- Explain how your organization makes money and where security cost sits within that
- Build a security budget from programme objectives with defensible assumptions
- Classify spend correctly as capital or operating and explain why it matters
- Calculate payback, total cost of ownership and simple return on investment
- Present risk reduction in financial terms without inventing precision
- Answer the standard finance challenges to a security proposal
- Negotiate a vendor contract with an understanding of the levers available

- Public, private and non-profit differences that change your argument
What you need before you start
- A security, IT or risk role with budget influence now or soon
- No accounting or finance background required
- A real or plausible proposal you would like to build during the course
- Around three hours a week outside sessions
